Potty training a puppy is one of the most important parts of their development. So it’s no surprise these same 5 toilet training questions are asked by pet parents on the daily.
We’ll be answering the most common potty training conundrums. Including when to start, how long it should take your puppy to get the hang of things, and the first steps as a new owner. Plus, how a reusable pee pad can be a total game changer.
Let’s get started!
Usually, a puppy is ready to start a potty training regime from around 12 weeks old. This is because at this age, they have enough control of their bladder and bowel movements to begin to learn how to hold it in! Before this point, if you are a breeder or happen to get your pup at 8 weeks, you are better off keeping these little furballs in a space with ample pee pads to soak up any excess mess. The Potty Buddy has enough absorbability to keep up with even the most uncontrolled of bladders - so no fear there…
Your best bet is to begin with a routine that centers around building an association. (This means you’ve got to think like a puppy….ruff!) You want to be 10 steps ahead, so that your pup is already in their designated spot before they need to go.
You want your puppy to associate a specific area with their business, so they naturally gravitate towards it when they need to go.
Typically, for a new puppy, this means visiting your “potty spot” at the following times:
First thing in the morning
After meals
After naps
After playtime
Before any journeys
Before bed
A reward after a successful elimination can really help to speed things up too.
Bear in mind that a puppy's age in months roughly equates to how long they can hold it for. I.e. at 3 months old, you might be needing to add an extra potty break in the night too.
If waking up bleary eyed at 3am, trying not to freeze in the garden as you beg Fido to go potty isn't your thing... that’s ok! That’s where a pee pad comes in. Placing a Potty Buddy in your pup’s crate or playpen means they can safely and hygienically relieve themselves without any hassle. You can simply wash, dry and reuse your Potty Buddy whenever you need, too. Hey presto!
It’s a great emergency back-up too, for those times when you forget to follow the schedule…
As easy as pie my friend! The same principle applies, except you might have to make it down a flight of stairs first is all. This will require more careful planning and sticking to the schedule to a tee.
Of course, if heading outdoors isn’t convenient, you can always take your pup to the pee pad instead.
Placing a Potty Buddy in a secluded spot, with it’s easily identifiable design, means your puppy can build the same association with a pee pad as they can with going outdoors. You could even place the pad on a balcony if you have one, for a little alfresco training.
There’s no right or wrong timeframe for potty training, and it’s a marathon more than a sprint - trust us!
By around 6 months your dog’s bladder should be fully developed, allowing them to hold their business for around 6-8 hours. This means they should be able to last through the night. During the day, however, more toilet breaks are obviously much better for your dog's wellbeing, and a cozy Potty Buddy pee pad in their bed at night can’t hurt either.
Broadly, it takes roughly 4 to 6 months to completely potty train your pup. Even then, accidents are still likely to occur, especially during travel or after a change in circumstances (which is why a Potty Buddy can always come in handy.)
The more understanding, supportive and proactive you can be with your pup’s training, the quicker they are likely to hit the toileting jackpot - no accidents!
A subject of fierce Reddit debate, are males or females smarter at not pooping in the house? The answer is…who knows! Currently, there’s no scientific evidence to suggest either sex wins the potty training trophy.
However, anecdotal observations of many dog owners suggest that females are easier to train than males. Why? Some suggest that it's due to the fact that female dogs reach maturity faster, which could provide a vital edge in the race to potty glory.
There’s an interesting bit of trivia to share at your next dinner party….no? Just us?
