Help your dog have the best travel experience ever with these waggy wanderlust tips.
Travelling is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and it’s even better when your pooch is by your side. Here are 5 tips for travelling with your dog, and how to help your pooch to have a comfortable, safe and sensational experience as they trot the globe with you.
As with most things in life, preparation is key. By being organized and planning ahead, you won’t be hit with any ‘oops!’ moments down the road.
Start with your vet. It’s always wise to have a check-in before starting any travels. They can help ensure you have all the relevant vaccinations for your destination, make sure your pup is healthy enough to travel, and offer any specific advice that might be useful. It’s also wise to look up a few 24/7 vet practices along your route, so there’s always someone on hand if you need them.
Check your insurance too, and make sure you know what is covered and what isn’t. If you want peace of mind, you can always upgrade your policy short-term, or opt for a more travel-friendly provider.
Use apps like Bring Fido to find dog-friendly accommodation, restaurants, and parks, helping you to plan a canine-friendly route.
Last but not least, ensure your dog has up-to-date identification on them. This way, they’ll always be safely reunited with you, no matter what happens.
As well as getting your own suitcase in shape, think about what home comforts your dog will need too. Here’s a handy packing list to start you off:
Travel crate (for car or airplane use)
Leashes and harness
Collar with ID tags
Collapsible food and water bowls
On-the-go water bottle
Your dog’s regular food
Food and food bowl
Toys Medications Protective clothing - boots or coat for any extremes
Dog-safe insect repellent and sunscreen
Blanket
Dog-friendly cleaning supplies and room freshener
Microfiber dog towel
Brush and shampoo
Flea comb and tick remover
Poop bags
Treats
You might also want to think about including a Potty Buddy Potty Pad. In some accommodation, it might be tricky to get your dog outside in time - especially if they are young, struggle with incontinence, or are a super senior traveller. So a pee pad can come in real handy. Lightweight, machine washable, and durable; it’s the ideal travel partner.
Traveling by car can be a wonderful way to make travel accessible to your dog, as it’s much simpler than flying for our canine pals. However, it’s still important to make sure they stay safe and comfortable during the trip.
On a long road trip with a dog, make sure to take breaks every 4 hours to let your four-legged friend stretch their legs and have a toilet break.
As much as we all love how a dog looks with its head out the window, sadly this really isn’t safe. You and your dog will be much more at ease if they are safely secured during their travels. After all - you wouldn’t drive without a seatbelt, right? The safest way to secure your dog is in a crate. This means they can stretch out and relax, still look outside, and be secure - should you need to brake sharply for an emergency stop.
To help with travel sickness, make sure your dog has had at least a few hours between its last meal and the start of your travels. Also ensure they’ve had some thorough exercise before you set off, which can also help them relax and enjoy the ride.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s your pooch!
Flying, whilst requiring a little more preparation, is still very much possible for most dogs. Here are our tips for flying with dogs.
It’s important to check the restrictions of both your chosen airline and destination. Import laws, breed restrictions, and size restrictions can all come into play, so make sure you have the go-ahead before booking!
Getting out and about with your dog is so special - making memories together that will last a lifetime.
Start by finding areas that are dog friendly, using an app like Bring Fido (which we mentioned earlier) or contacting a local information center. If in doubt, leash up!
Always carry the essentials with you: water, food, foldable bowls, treats, sunscreen, medications, and a leash. If you are off hiking or out for longer periods of time, you can always invest in a doggy backpack - so they can share the load!
Most importantly? Have fun. Make the most of these special times with your buddy by your side. And share any travel snaps with us! We’d love to see them.
